The Heroes of the Indian freedom struggle can be divided into two obvious categories. Those who struggled for freedom by using constitutional methods and those who favored direct action including revolutionary outrages. In the former category, we can put Gopal Krishan Gokhale, Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru etc. In the latter category, we can include Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Vipin Chandra pal, Rash Behari Bose, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, etc. The leaders of both types were right in their own way. Gandhi preached truth and non-violence. His own method to fight injustice was to refuse to cooperate with an unjust system. He didn’t believe in violent, direct action and bloodshed. Jawahar Lal Nehru was his closest follower.
